Seventh heaven! Another rainbow jersey for MVDP: Is his cyclo-cross dominance good for the sport?

Seventh heaven! Another rainbow jersey for MVDP: Is his cyclo-cross dominance good for the sport?

Mathieu van der Poel has done it again. He's conquered the mud, the sand, and the grueling courses to claim his seventh UCI Cyclo-cross World Championship title, equaling that of Roger De Vlaeminck.

This latest victory cements his place as a legend of the sport, but it also raises a question: is such sustained dominance good for cyclo-cross?

A Season of Two Halves (and a Whole Lot of Winning)

Van der Poel's season wasn't without its challenges. He faced stiff competition, particularly from his arch-rival Wout van Aert. We saw thrilling battles, nail-biting finishes, and moments of sheer brilliance from both riders. While van Aert snagged some key victories, van der Poel consistently found the extra gear, the tactical edge, or the sheer power to take the win when it mattered most, MVDP actually won every race he entered this season (8).

The World Championships in Liévin, France, served as the perfect culmination. In a race that demanded both strength and technical skill, van der Poel showcased his mastery. He navigated the challenging course with precision, demonstrating his unparalleled bike-handling abilities. His victory was decisive, leaving no doubt about his status as the world's best. Van Aert, hampered by a poor 4th row grid position, fought valiantly to move through the field to earn the silver medal, but the deficit proved too much to overcome leaving 35,00 spectators and TV viewers disappointed at having missed the head-to-head that we so desperately wanted.

The Argument for MVDP's Dominance

There's no denying that van der Poel's talent is exceptional. His dominance elevates the sport in several ways:

  • Increased Viewership:  People tune in to watch greatness. MVDP's races are must-see events, attracting larger audiences and bringing more attention to cyclo-cross.

  • Higher Standards:  His performances push other riders to raise their game. They have to innovate, train harder, and strategize better to compete with him. This ultimately benefits the sport as a whole.

  • Excitement and Drama: Even when he wins, van der Poel's races are rarely boring. His aggressive riding style and tactical prowess make for thrilling viewing. The close battles with van Aert this season are a perfect example.

The Argument Against MVDP's Dominance

On the other hand, some argue that van der Poel's dominance can be detrimental to cyclo-cross:

  • Predictability: If one rider consistently wins, it can make the outcome feel predictable, potentially discouraging viewers and sponsors.

  • Demotivation for Other Riders:  It can be demoralizing for other competitors to constantly face an opponent who seems unbeatable. This could lead to a decline in motivation and competitiveness.

  • Stifled Development:  The focus on MVDP can overshadow the talent and achievements of other riders who are working hard to reach the top.

The Balance

Ultimately, the truth lies somewhere in between. While van der Poel's dominance might create a sense of predictability at times, it also inspires others to push their limits. The rivalries he forges, particularly with van Aert, create a compelling narrative that draws viewers in. Van Aert's struggles with grid position in Liévin, for example, added another layer of drama to the race, highlighting the tactical elements of the sport.

What's crucial for the sport's health is that other riders continue to challenge van der Poel. We've seen flashes of brilliance from riders like van Aert, Pidcock, and others. Their continued development and the emergence of new contenders will be essential to keep the sport dynamic and exciting.

Looking Ahead

Mathieu van der Poel's reign at the top of cyclo-cross is a testament to his incredible talent and dedication. Whether his dominance is ultimately good or bad for the sport remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: he's a captivating athlete who makes cyclo-cross a spectacle worth watching. As long as other riders continue to challenge him, the sport will remain vibrant and exciting for years to come.
